The concept of Wuyi Rock Tea terroir has been debated for centuries. Tea is the essence of the mountains and soil. Excellent tea comes from good mountains and waters; terroir is the fundamental factor determining the quality ceiling of the tea leaves.
There are many criteria for judging the quality of a terroir: soil, topography, climate, and water flow are all indispensable. The origin of famous teas can even prove the quality of the terroir in reverse. Wuyi Rock Tea has a history of over two thousand years, with heritage, expansion, and established conclusions.
Soil, Quality, and Rock Rhyme
Wuyi Rock Tea is known for its "Yan Yun" (Rock Rhyme). Yan Yun is a unique, indescribable wonder. The abundance of Yan Yun is one of the criteria for judging the quality of a Rock Tea. It comes from the unique Danxia landform of Mount Wuyi and the long-standing accumulation of its soil.
Zhengyan (Purple Sandy Gravel)
Represented by the famous "Three Kengs and Two Jian" (San Keng Liang Jian), as well as Tianxin Rock, Matou Rock, Zhuqiao, Jiulong Qiao, etc. The soil contains a high amount of sand and gravel (24.83%~29.47%). The soil layer is thick and loose, with about 50% porosity, providing good aeration and drainage. The valley cliffs block summer sun and winter cold winds. With fine groundwater seepage and good surrounding vegetation, it forms the unique "Tea Soil" of Zhengyan tea. The soil is rich in potassium and manganese, with moderate acidity and a gravelly texture.
Banyan (Red Alumino-Silicate Soil)
Mainly distributed in Qingshi Rock, Bishi Rock, Yanziqiao, etc. It mainly consists of thick rocky red soil. The soil layer is thinner, with high aluminum content, very low potassium, high acidity, and a sticky texture.
Zhouchadi (River Alluvial Yellow Soil)
Mainly refers to the yellow soil tea gardens outside the above areas, as well as river terraces and stream-side alluvial soil tea gardens. The range is relatively wide.
Topography and Taste
In addition to the three production areas divided by rock quality, the more important distinctions are Keng, Jian, Qiao, Yan, and Dong. These production areas are distinguished by terrain and microclimate characteristics, which are the decisive factors in forming the taste, flavor, and aroma of Wuyi Rock Tea.
Deciding Wuyi Terroir, Keng and Jian Reign Supreme.
Keng and Jian terroirs are widely known in Wuyi Rock Tea production areas, famous for the stable and high quality of their tea output. Terroirs named after "Keng" are surrounded by peaks clamping up on both sides, with winding terrain and low sunlight exposure. Tea produced in "Keng" terroirs has a quiet, elegant aroma and a mellow, rich liquor.
The most famous "Three Kengs and Two Jian" in Wuyi Mountain occupy three "Kengs". The "Beef" (Rougui from Niulankeng) and the "Old Cong Shui Xian" from Huiyuan Keng are extreme premium Rock Teas that gourmets eagerly pursue.
Where the Jian Dwell, the Herbs Flourish.
"Jian does not leave Keng, Keng does not leave Jian." In the growth of tea plants, the quality and direction of water flow play a decisive role. "Jian" terroirs usually have rock walls on both sides forming a "V" shaped gorge, with spring water running through them. The climate is humid with less sunlight, which is conducive to the tea plants absorbing ground nutrients. Similar to "Keng", but due to the water flow environment, the Rock Tea grown here has a cool, fragrant aroma and extremely soft liquor.
The Liuxiang Jian and Wuyuan Jian from the "Three Kengs and Two Jian" are examples of Jian terroirs. Due to topographical limitations, the production capacity of Jian terroirs is not high, but the quality is exceptionally good.
Qiao: The Nest of Birds and Beasts.
Qiao terroirs are nest-shaped, mostly located in the middle of mountains. They are generally small in area, but the tea produced is often exquisite. Their rich biodiversity and primitive topographical forms result in diverse and wonderfully unique tea samples. The Rock Tea produced in Qiao terroirs is soft, tender, delicate, and elegantly long-lasting.
In recent years, the Yanziqiao ecological tea garden has risen to prominence. Jiulong Qiao is the location of the high-priced Da Hong Pao mother trees, and there is also the old-growth Shui Xian from Zhuqiao.
Yan: The Essence of Rock, The Spirit of Tea.
"Yan" terroirs are named after rocks. Most are located at higher elevations with fewer shelters. Tea produced in Yan terroirs has a different saturation of sunlight exposure, resulting in varying amounts of aromatic substances. The finished tea often has a full, high aroma, and the liquor is more dominant and powerful.
Well-known Yan terroirs include Matou Rock, Bishi Rock, and Foguo Rock. The Rougui from Matou Rock is called "Horse Meat" (Marou), the Rougui from Foguo Rock is also of excellent quality, and the Shui Xian from Bishi Rock is equally mouth-watering.
Dong: The Cave Heaven.
"Dong" terroirs have fertile soil and short sunlight exposure. The short distance between the rock walls on both sides allows for the accumulation of highly permeable weathered shale. Therefore, the natural conditions for tea trees growing in Dong are extremely excellent: avoiding direct sunlight in summer and blocking cold winds with rock walls in winter.
The growing environment of "Dong" tea trees is relatively cool, and the tea style is relatively softer. Well-known Dong terroirs include the famous Guidong and Shuilian Dong. Among them, the Rougui from Guidong is called "Ghost Meat" (Guirou), which is truly unique; the Shui Xian from Shuilian Dong is also of superior quality.
