Caffeine in Tea

茶中的咖啡因

Tea contains caffeine — but what it also contains is unique in the plant kingdom: L-theanine, an amino acid that transforms how caffeine acts in the body. The result is something coffee cannot offer.

The Unique Equation

Why tea energy feels different from coffee energy

Coffee delivers caffeine in isolation. The result is familiar: a sharp rise, heightened cortisol, anxious energy, and an inevitable crash. Tea offers the same molecule with a companion: L-theanine (茶氨酸), found almost exclusively in Camellia sinensis.

L-theanine crosses the blood-brain barrier and promotes alpha brainwave activity — the state associated with relaxed alertness. It also moderates the speed at which caffeine is absorbed, smoothing the curve from spike to crash into something more like a sustained plateau.

Traditional Chinese descriptions of this state — 清醒 (clear wakefulness) — anticipate the neuroscience by over a millennium. High-quality teas with a favourable theanine-to-caffeine ratio are best consumed in the morning or early afternoon, when presence and sustained focus are required.

"

Tea does not wake you up the way coffee does. It clears a space inside you — and then you are already awake.

Variables

Six factors that determine caffeine in your cup

01·海拔高度

Growing Altitude

High-altitude teas grow slower in cooler temperatures, concentrating both caffeine and amino acids. A Wuyi rock oolong from 900m will differ markedly from a lowland variety.

02·遮阴种植

Shading

When tea plants are shaded from direct sunlight, they produce more chlorophyll and theanine — and more caffeine — as compensation. Gyokuro and matcha are extreme examples.

03·采摘时节

Harvest Timing

Young spring buds carry more caffeine than older summer leaves. Pre-Qingming Longjing (picked before April 5) has notably higher caffeine than autumn Longjing from the same plant.

04·水温

Water Temperature

Caffeine extracts most readily in hot water. A cold-brewed green tea contains up to 60% less caffeine than a hot infusion from the same leaf — ideal for evening drinking.

05·冲泡时间

Steep Duration

The first 30 seconds of infusion extracts the majority of caffeine. In gongfu brewing, many short infusions create a relatively steady, manageable caffeine curve throughout a session.

06·茶水比例

Leaf-to-Water Ratio

More leaf per millilitre means more caffeine per cup. A dense gongfu pot has more caffeine per sip than a dilute Western-style cup — but each sip is smaller, so total consumption is similar.
